About Me

I know it’s not exactly the best time of the year to talk about walleye fishing or any type of fishing but you have to start sometime.  Once Spring rolls around I can promise that this blog will be full of detailed fishing reports and stories.

I suppose I should add a few things about myself here.  My name is Mark Schaller and I am a die hard Detroit River Walleye Fisherman.  I was fortunate to have a Father and Grandfather who loved to fish and they took me along on just about every trip.  I can remember trips out into Lake Michigan in the same boat I own today for Lake Trout and Coho Salmon.  They instilled in me a passion for fishing that still lives on today.  My family has quite a history when it comes to the St. Clair and Detroit River.  My Great Grandmother on my Dad’s side was one of the founding family members of Ecorse and eventually her daughter and my Grandfather owned a marina (Schaller Marina) in Wyandotte during the 50’s and 60’s.  My Grandfather’s older brother Ed and his younger brother Hank developed the Schaller Automatic Trolling Reel used to handline for walleye on the St. Clair & Detroit river system.  I still use my reel along with quite a few other fishermen.

When I am not fishing I also go kayaking, geo-caching, camping, hiking, biking and a little small game hunting when I can.  I don’t get a lot of free time but when I do I try to spend it outdoors as much as possible.

I like the blog. I have one as well out of the Detroit area but don’t have the walleye skills it looks like you have. Great blog though. I will make sure to tune in once the action starts heating up!

Thanks but I wouldn’t call it mad skills. More like I have been at it for a long time. I’ve learned a few things along the way. Won’t be too much longer and it will be back to walleye fishing 24/7.

Hi, We came upon your name while researching info regarding Schaller’s Automatic Trolling Reels. We have 3 of these reels which appear never to have been used and would like to know if they have any value. Was given 1 in the 1980’s while living in Michigan. The other 2 were purchased at an estate auction in northern Wisconsin last year. We mainly collect lures, but have some other fishing related items. Always interested in the history.
Any ideas as to how to research further?

Their really isn’t a whole lot of written history about the reels. Between my Dad, myself and two old river rats we are it. The reels themselves are more valuable to some than others. I have seen them sell on E-Bay for everything from 20 to 100 dollars. I saw a couple on Craig’s list once and the guy was asking 300 each for them. I asked if it was a typo and he had a few disparaging remarks for me. Ed started making the reels in the late 1920’s and continued on with them until the early 60’s. I would like to see pictures of the reels if that is possible.

Sure, not a problem. Don’t know how many I have and I’ll have to dig them out.

Well, Please let me know. I like to make stuff while the weather is cold, not an Ice fisherman. I would love to spend a weekend trying to fix them or make some arts and crafts projects with my daughters. Please let me know how I can leave my email, don’t want to leave it so that its public. Thank you
